Tranquil bays, golden sands and fantastic food. If that’s what you’re looking for then Pefkos is perfect for you. This up-and-coming holiday destination really is a hidden gem. Often overshadowed by its larger and livelier neighbour, Lindos, Pefkos is a sun-lovers paradise. A peaceful resort with Blue Flag beaches, crystal blue waters and restaurants that truly make the most of the Aegean Sea views.
Beaches
Pefkos is home to some of the most stunning and diverse beaches on the island. Providing everything you need for a fantastic day at the coast, Lee Beach is the main beach in Pefkos. Recently awarded Blue Flag status, this beach is a large, pristine, deep-gold stretch of sand with fantastic facilities including plenty of loungers and parasols and a host of restaurants nearby. The water is shallow here making it an ideal spot for families. St. Thomas Bay is a smaller strip of sand where locals tend to moor their fishing boats. A sheltered bay with rocks harbouring schools of fish, this is the perfect place to grab your snorkel and explore the coastline. For something a bit different, head to almost private, Arkeftas Bay. There isn’t too much in the way of sand here but the crystal clear waters make for a stunning secluded swim.
Food & Drink
Traditional Greek food is the focus in Rhodes. Often families or groups will get together and share numerous ‘mezethes’ which is Greek for appetizers. However, before a meal is started, it is often customary to have a shot or glass of ouzo – so don’t be alarmed if you are given shots before you are even seated. The food in Pefkos is very typical of Rhodian cuisine but due to the fishing heritage, there is also a heavy influence of fresh seafood on offer. For a dish traditionally found in Rhodes, try ‘rouzetia me skorthalia’ – a dish of fried red fish in garlic. If you’re not a big seafood eater, don’t worry – there’s still a wealth of dishes to try in Pefkos. Try the famous ‘souvlaki’. Often made with pork or chicken, this traditional, grilled-meat dish is very popular among locals and tourists alike. Of course, once you’re finished your meal you can wash it all down with another shot of ouzo.
Culture
Rhodes, like any Dodecanese island, is steeped in Greek history. Whitewash buildings line the streets as you stumble past remnants of buildings that once were. Pefkos, however, has a slightly different vibe. Originally a summer agricultural and fishing base for those who live further inland, Pefkos is slowly growing in size due to tourism, and so, much of the town is fairly modern. You’ll still see the whitewash buildings indicative of the Mediterranean but the vibe here is very relaxed and holiday orientated. Relaxation, food and happiness are at the heart of Pefkos. So sit back and enjoy a drink with the locals - just don’t forget when it’s your turn to get the ouzo in!
Nightlife
Fantastic food and laid-back drinks are the main focus of Pefkos. With an abundance of restaurants to suit every taste and budget, you will be sure to find something to you love. Finish your meal and head to one of the many bars this town has to offer. Whether you like northern soul, motown, rock or dance music, there is a bar here for you. Some bars here are open till the early hours so find your favourite and enjoy the hot summer nights.
