Portimao, in the Algarve, is a flourishing fishing port which has, in recent years, become hugely popular with people who flock on holidays to Portimao for the sun, culture and food. For example, in April there's Formula One speed boat racing while in September you can be a spectator at the Horse Jumping event. Animal lovers should also take a trip to the Quinta da Rocha nature reserve.
The nightlife is Portimao great for those looking for a good night out on the town. There are several authentic Portuguese restaurants serving traditional local delicacies including delicious fish and seafood. The riverside square is the main area and is home to some great bars. But for those looking for something a bit more vibrant night out head to nearby Praia da Rocha where you'll find a casino, live music venues and plenty of nightclubs!
The Portimao town church dates back to 1476 and is an example of the town's great history. Although a lot of the town has been redeveloped there are still plenty of examples of traditional architecture. The nearby village of Armacao de Pera is home to an 18th Century fortress while the fishing village of Ferragudo remains largely unspoilt and is a great place to visit if you want to observe true Algarve culture.
The Portimao council have begun to charge tourist tax as of 14th April 2024 on stays of up to 7 days payable locally. If you're staying longer than 7 days than the tourist tax is payable up to the 7th day and your stay will be free of tax beyond this. Amounts are as follows:
High season - April 1st - October 31st - €2 per person, per day (under 13yr olds free of tax).
Low Season - November 1st - March 31st - €1 per person, per day (under 13yr olds free of tax).
