What's on?

Rich in culture, Madeira has a long history of art, crafts, music, and tradition to its name. Throughout the year you’ll find the island celebrating a different festival each month, with particularly spectacular celebrations held over the Christmas period (which actually finishes on the 15th of January here!). The first event after the Christmas festivities in the Panelo Festival at the end of January. One of the islands oldest traditions, ach year families gather together and cook up a storm. As the weather starts to warm, the locals celebrate the produce that this wonderful island produces with festivals dedicated to sugarcane, lemon and wine! Joyous and welcoming, the culture of Madeira is one that welcomes all visitors, old and new alike.

Food & Drink

More than just a type of cake, the food of Madeira is a delicious treat for the taste buds. Whether you’re enjoying a simple tomato and onion soup, a tasty freshly-caught tuna steak, or savouring a deliciously sweet passion fruit pudding, the food of Madeira is rich and plentiful. Make sure to try the delicious espetada – beef skewers marinated then cooked over hot charcoals (which make a great sandwich when popped inside the traditional bolo do caco) and the national dish of scabbard fish served with a banana and passionfruit sauce. Before you leave, don’t forget to try the islands traditional drink, Poncha!
