A Serious Cause for Concern

My friend Maxim has faced an unpleasant situation with one of the hostels in New York. After he checked out, his MacBook was left behind. Resolving such an issue and returning the device should be a standard procedure. However, it’s been over a month, and the laptop still hasn’t been returned. As it turns out, it was mistakenly sent to another city, and the hostel staff has completely stopped responding to his attempts to reach them.

This situation is unacceptable. If a place treats guests’ belongings and concerns in such a manner, how can there be any trust in their service?

I would like to address the hostel’s management: incidents like this are a clear signal that changes are needed. A service that ignores the needs of its customers undermines the reputation of the establishment. It’s time to change the approach: learn to listen to your guests, resolve their issues, and build trust. This is in the best interest of both travelers and the business itself.

I hope Maxim gets his MacBook back and that the hostel learns an important lesson from this situation.

When Service Fails: A Story That Can’t Be Ignored!!!

The hostel is seriously overpriced. It is nice they decorate their walls with portaits of civil rights activists like Martin Luther King, and tell nice stories about stimulating cultural exchange etc. However if you dare to charge 150 USD a night for a place in a dormatory then you seriously limit the human right of poor students to explore the world! In Boston I paid 37 USD for a HI hostel that was better.

Shockingly, there was very few cheaper accomodation available in New York around Christmas. At least not close enough to the center. So yep, I chose 'voluntarily' to pay this price because I didn't want to cancel the trip. Nevertheless for this price I expected a better experience on the following points:
1 - They are not even serving free Coffee! Sure there is a kitchen and a pricy Cafe, but a youth hostel without free coffee is no youth hostel! Hi Youth Hostel Boston serves free coffee as well as free breakfast for a quarter of the price.
2 - Staff was not overly friendly during check in. After checken in I could not immediately find the way to the stairs- I was not looking well because I was exhausted from the travel. So I asked the security guy, he was visibly irritated when he showed me the right way, then he vented his frustration about my stupid question by exclaiming loudly:'Jezus!' What a welcome! 
3: Blankets were really thin. In the early morning I got cold and had to put a sweater on 
4: toilets were often not clean 
5: you have to pay extra for a locker that can be closed 

Even in the sick circumstance there is hardly a less expensive place in the whole town, 150 USD for a dormatory is just too much! So I call it the Christmas scrooge hostel. Martin Luther King would have frowned hearing about a youth hostel were a night in a dormatory costs the same as one or two weeks of groceries!

Got ripped off - no friendly hostel

I stayed at the Hi hostel for 5 nights. I had an easy check in no problems and nice enough staff. I arrived a little early so had a coffee in the little cafe downstairs. The hostel itself is very clean and has lots of room for people to relax downstairs. I loved the free water refills saved me money every day which is always good in NY! 

Arrival to Hostel

I flew into Newark then got the free air train from the airport to NJ transit train took about 10 mins. I then got the train from the NJ station into Penn station ( 16 dollars one way) which is a short journey also. For the subway google maps will be your best friend! Just type in penn station to hi hostel new york and it gives you the stop, the subway and the station to get off at its incredible and so easy to use I especially love how it will show you how many stops so you wont get lost it is so easy to use 😀   I bought the unlimited 7 day metro card 34 dollars from a machine in the subway. You can also tap your card now so you have options. The metro card worked for me and its a nice keepsake since they are going to be gone soon from NY.  I found so many people along the way particularly in Newark airport who helped me with ticket machines, directions etc all happy to help... 

The room
I stayed in a 4 bed female dorm. It was clean, the locker was good it fit my medium sized suitcase, clean linen and blankets also a towel which was handy.  The fan in the room is a little loud but I just got used to it. I had no issues sleeping. Plenty of charging outlets over the bed and a little light so handy. 

Bathrooms and showers 

I had 2 separate wash rooms on my floor. Inside each was about 5 showers and 5 toilets. They had sinks, hairdryer, mirrors etc all spotless. One bathroom had no hot water at all but thankfully I tried the other which always had hot water so I just used that one and it was fine. I never had to wait for a shower always plenty free when needed.  

The area

The area around the hostel was fine just be careful coming back late at night like anywhere else. I had zero problems using the subway you see some crazy things but just carry on and you should be fine . The walk from the subway station to the hostel was literally 3 mins. Plenty of restaurants around the hostel including a mc donalds and a dunkin right across the road. The hostel itself feels very safe always security at night and you need to use your room card to enter and then again to enter through another door into the main area so I always felt safe as a solo female guest.

All in all I thought it was great value for money especially coming over christmas and new years. No extra fees at all and I would have no issue staying again in fact I came home and booked with Hi hostel in Boston which looks equally as nice and offers great value.  

Tip - I used the city pass 5 attractions which I found great value for less than 140 dollars 

Take the free staten island ferry to see the city lights at night 🌙 ✨️

Exceeded expectations and will definitely stay again if I come back to New York

It is impossible to contact the hotel, they have not returned my MacBook for more than 2 weeks and do not contact, it is impossible to contact the staff. The rooms are good, the location is great. But the staff is not at all responsive. The hostel chain itself is good in other cities

my first visit to the USA started with this hostel, it surprised me with its location and price for the New Year holiday
